The Diabatic and Nonlinear Origin of El Ni?o

報告摘要:
The talk introduces the diabatic and nonlinear theory for El Ni?o. This theory posits that because of nonlinearity, there exist two equilibrium states (attractors) for the coupled tropical Pacific system. One is zonally symmetric with the warm-pool extending all the way to the eastern Pacific; the other is strongly zonally asymmetric with the warm-pool confined to the western Pacific. El Ni?o results from the fact that under the current intensity of radiative heating, both equilibrium states are unstable, resulting in the apparent “wandering” behavior in between these two states as seen in the observations. The theory readily accounts for some observed features of El Ni?o that linear or adiabatic oscillator theories have difficulty to explain, such as its diversity, irregular occurrence, and asymmetry with La Ni?a. The theory also explains why three types of ENSO have been found among the simulations by the state-of-the-art models and why it has been difficult to capture a regime of strongly positively skewed ENSO by these models as seen in recent observations.

孫德征教授,1985年在南京大學氣象系氣候專業獲學士,1987年在中科院大氣物理所獲大氣動力學碩士,1992年在麻省理工學院(MIT)獲氣象學博士,1992-1995年在普林斯頓大學(Princeton University)地球流體實驗室做博士后工作,1995年加入美國國家大氣研究中心(NCAR)高級研究項目、1997年加入美國國家大氣海洋局(NOAA)和科羅拉多大學聯合研究所,2012年起任該所資深研究員(Senior Scientist),2019年加入復旦大學,任特聘教授(Distinguished Professor)。主要研究方向是氣候動力學,包括水汽和云的氣候角色、大尺度大氣動力學、大尺度海洋動力學、大尺度海氣相互作用和全球氣候變遷的模擬和預測等。代表性原創科學貢獻包括:大尺度海氣耦合在調節熱帶最高海溫的決定角色 (Dynamical Ocean Thermostat Theory)、厄爾尼諾(El Ni?o)的非絕熱非線性的起源 (The Diabatic and Nonlinear Origin of El Ni?o)、厄爾尼諾-南方濤動整流 (ENSO Rectification)在產生年代際和更長時間尺度上氣候變化的重要角色等。研究成果發表在包括Science和Journal of Climate等多種國際頂尖雜志上。主持參與了多項由美國自然科學基金(NSF),美國國家大氣海洋局 (NOAA),中國自然科學基金會(CNSF)和中國科技部(CSTM)等資助的科研項目。編輯了由美國地球物理學會(AGU)發表的氣候動力學專著《氣候動力學:氣候為什么一直在變化?》(Climate Dynamics: Why Does Climate Vary?)。
